Rocking New Year’s Eve: Resolutions In Times Square
According to our official Times Square website, “For 114 years, Times Square has been the center of worldwide attention on New Year’s Eve, ever since the owners of One Times Square began in 1904 to conduct rooftop celebrations to greet the New Year.”
Even if you are a New Yorker, you might not realize how long the Times Square New Year’s Eve Party has been going on.
Historically we have been lowering the ball since 1907. And now New York is proud to say “this tradition is now a universal symbol of welcoming the New Year.

Music and dancing, hand-outs, balloons, and confetti will make the hours fly by as celebrants become close friends in the giant crowds.
For New Year’s Eve, 2019
Be sure you bundle up because, although the temperatures rock in the 40’s, the forecast calls for rain.
Signs and screens will blaze as the party starts at 6:00 pm when the Times Square Alliance sanitation crew hands out free hats, favors, glasses, noisemakers and tons of other hand-outs for the festivities.
Out-of-towners might not know it, but you should eat before the show starts. Or bring some snacks because you won’t find any hot dog stands open.
Don’t try to smuggle in any booze or you are liable to get a ticket.
Prepare to see a great show and watch a geodesic ball of about 6 tons of kaleidoscopic Waterford Crystal drop at the crack of midnight Jan. 1, 2019.
- In case you don’t know, as accountants, we love numbers, so here are some of our favorite ones about NYC’s New Year’s Eve Ball:
- it weighs 11,875 pounds.
- Likewise, it is 12 feet in diameter and covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles.
The triangles of crystal range from 4¾ inches to 5 ¾ inches per side.
Did you know those triangles support beautiful and symbolic designs? 288 of them are the Gift of Harmony design of small rosettes. 288 are the Gift of Serenity design of butterflies. Then, 288 are the Gift of Kindness with circled rosettes. 288 are the Gift of Wonder design, with a starburst. And, 1248 triangles are the Gift of imagination design with a mirrored reflection of intricate wedge cuts.
When you cease to wonder about the crystal of the ball, then you can wonder at the lighting. The ball is illuminated by 32,256 LEDs. It makes its own light show with a palette of 16 million colors and billions of artistic patterns.
Last but not least, the numerals of the new year, 2019, stand 7 feet tall and contain 516 multicolored energy efficient bulbs.
The show will kick off with the Sino-American Friendship Association’s (“SAFA”) Chinese cultural performance from Chongqing China. See it on the Countdown Stage at Duffy Island between 46th and 47th Streets. And no doubt the entire crowd will witness the grand finale of the Chinese cultural performance when red and gold pyrotechnic effects will shoot from the top One Times Square.
